Ika-chan! Come back!

I’m deeply saddened once again that I have to realize another anime I’ve held dear to my heart is ending. Blasted Gregorian calendars. I celebrated the first day of the new year by rewatching, and finishing Shinryaku! Ika Musume. This anime managed to catch me off guard, even though I had read a portion of the original manga. I still have a hard time watching the last mini-episode in episode 5. Goddamn nutbladder destruction fest, I tell you. Please let there be a second season!

As a side note, I have no idea why I didn’t check up on the director that had done this show: Tsutomu Mizushima. His experience shows exactly why Shinryaku! Ika Musume was as awesome as it was. Big Windup!/Ookiku Furikabutte, Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan, Crayon Shin-chan, and Genshiken. I don’t quite feel like giving an entire rundown of the anime I just mentioned, but those are the other work he’s done that I’ve watched and enjoyed. The stand out for me, from that list, is Big Windup for being a show about baseball, and absolutely nailing the technical portrayal of the sport. No unnecessary shonen-eqsue super moves that enable them to outperform their opponent; the only thing that makes the team better is being smarter, cooperation, and training harder.

One more thing I have to add about Dokuro-chan. If you think silly video games have too much blood spilling, give Dokuro-chan a watch. The main character has enough blood to fill up the Colosseum twice over. But it’s a crazy comedy, too, so you’ll have a bloody good time! And maybe herp so hard, you’ll derp.
